Emily will be teaching a one-day workshop at the Oregon Book Arts Conference: Focus on the Book Arts:

Variations on Long Stitch Binding with Unusual Materials

Participants will learn variations on the classic long stitch binding by constructing two blank books. The first example will be using heavy double-sided Unryu paper from Thailand which has mulberry and kozo fibers for the outside and 100% cotton paper for the inside pages, using waxed thread for the binding. The teacher will show examples of this technique and handouts with diagrams will accompany this part of the class. The second book will be a student choice: cake boxes, fabric, sewn and collaged material can serve for covers. The inside pages can also consist of found materials, small objects, pop-ups and envelopes, as well as mixed papers. This will be the fun part - sharing of materials and ideas are encouraged.
Skill level: All levels
Length of workshop: 1 day
Materials fee: $15.00
Materials: Basic kit + any unusual materials you wish to incorporate into a book.
